  • Thre is so much to learn from this episode. Aside from the issues about respect for the rules of social media (which is causing most online debate at the moment), I think the main issue is one of "Story". 3M covering a car in post-it-notes to try and push a competition about creative use of post-it-notes = marketing puff = a non-story. People having a laugh at a colleagues expense by covering his car in post-in-notes = story (hence success in terms of spread through social media). Creative output is the same in both instances – but the story makes the difference. Its not just an image licencing issue – 3M could have embraced the real story – but they totally failed to understand what was going on.
